VSS: Plunge

Based on the daily writing prompts on Twitter, I write very short stories (#vss365) about the Captain, First Mate and Deckhand in every-day situations.

Today’s Story

“I think I want–“
“No problem! We’ll go through this strait, take a shortcut here, and round that cape. Tricky winds, but if we trim the sails, it’ll work.”
The First Mate arched an eyebrow at the Captain. “And you say I plunge in head over heels?”

Ship’s Tip

First Mates are quickly overwhelmed by too many options. Everything is cool in their eyes, and they’re horrible at choosing!

But sometimes, what overwhelms them is actually their over-excited Captain presenting too many radically different routes to your next destination.

To regain your bearings, physically sit down, write down the options and ideas that come to mind without filtering. When you’re done, check each item on the list and ask yourself: “Do I like this?”

Only answer yes or no. When in doubt, flip a coin (and ignore it if you hate the outcome) to decide. This way, you eliminate the excess of options, so you can focus your planning and your energy on what items on your list you really want!
