Based on the daily writing prompts on Twitter, I write very short stories (#vss365) about the Captain, First Mate and Deckhand in every-day situations.
Golden trimming contrasted majestically against the navy blue of the uniform. Accoutered to polished perfection, the Captain stared in the mirror.
“Take it off,” said the First Mate. “It fits, it looks good, but you hate it. Don’t force this on yourself.”
From a very young age, we’re taught to conform to other people’s expectations. To wear this or that “uniform” to define us not only as a group, but as an individual.
Our Captains are often very susceptible to law & order, and to the literal or figurative dress code that comes with following other people’s rules. It gives them certainty.
First Mates tend to be more rebellious. They want to choose their own colours, their own flag, their own appearance. We should listen to their fashion advice more often!
