Taking another cookie, another cigarette or another cup of coffee: you know you shouldn’t and all the reasons why it’s better to leave it, but you do it anyway.
We’re taught at an early age that not having the self-discipline to deny yourself what you crave is a sign of weakness. Good news: it’s not. It’s only natural.
Now before you rush off to finish the rest of that cookie jar, the fact that wanting those cookies is natural doesn’t make them good for you. The long-term health risks of our garden variety addictions are real – and your Captain is right to remind you of them, even if the rest of your Crew ignores that warning.
If self-discipline isn’t the answer, what is?
Physical addiction to the sugar, nicotine or caffeine seems the likely cause of these cravings, but that is only a small part of it. The main reason you just HAVE to grab another cooki or light up another cigarette isn’t physical, it’s emotional. And our First Mate is VERY bad at self-discipline…
