Episode 9 - Why we will believe ANYTHING under stress...
...and how to talk to loved ones who are invested in conspiracy theories
After the last couple of years, chances are it has crossed you mind more than once:
How is it possible that well-educated, intelligent people can become completely invested in the idea that 5G mobile phone masts cause Covid, that the Earth is flat, or that the world is secretly run by a cabal of lizard people? To them, that reality is as convincing as your view of reality is for you.
Exactly that is why trying to convince them you are right and they are wrong is not going to work. Your rational arguments fall on deaf ears, because their belief doesn’t spring from facts or evidence. It springs from something else entirely: stress.
When we are stressed, rational thought becomes difficult. Remember last time you were nervous or anxious about something and had to make a logical decision? It’s hard to think clearly when you’re upset or scared.
In this video, I explain what happens in your brains that make logical thought so difficult under stress, how that explains why so many people these days believe in conspiracy theories – and how you can talk with your loved ones who are invested in such beliefs without triggering a fight.
Do you recognise this and would you like help to deal with the situation? Let’s have a casual chat to help you get your bearings. It’s free of charge, no strings attached:
